Ullico Statement on Potential Exposure

Union Labor Life Statement on Potential Exposure of Personal Data

Washington, D.C. (June 12, 2014) — The Union Labor Life Insurance Company (Union Labor Life), an affiliate of Ullico Inc. (Ullico), has reported the potential exposure of personal data of certain individuals to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and has begun notifying various state regulatory agencies, as required by federal and state data privacy laws.

The potential data exposure results from the possible theft of a laptop from Union Labor Life's Silver Spring, Maryland offices. The incident was promptly reported to the Montgomery County Police and an investigation by Union Labor Life is ongoing.

There is no evidence at this time that the data on the laptop has been accessed or acquired by a third party. The data at risk for exposure contains information regarding participants (including dependents) in certain benefit plans that purchased, or applied to purchase, medical stop loss or group life insurance policies from Union Labor Life during the approximate period of January 2012 through February 2014.

Union Labor Life treats privacy and protection of personal data extremely seriously, very much regrets this incident, and has taken the following pro-active measures to address the situation:

  • We have launched an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
  • We have retained an experienced third-party vendor, AllClear ID, Inc., to provide notice of this development to all affected individuals. Each affected individual is automatically covered by AllClear ID's complete identity repair service, which includes fraud resolution. An affected individual who becomes aware of a problem with his or her identity or credit may simply call 1-877-412-7146, and a dedicated investigator will do the work to recover financial losses, restore the individual's credit and make sure his or her identity is returned to its proper condition.  All affected individuals will also have access to AllClear ID's credit monitoring and protection services if they choose to enroll.
  • A thorough review of the company's administrative, personnel, technological and physical safeguards is underway to ensure that all data is appropriately protected.

This incident does not affect customers of Ullico's affiliated property and casualty insurance lines, which include fiduciary liability, excess fiduciary, union liability and governmental liability coverages.  Investors in Ullico's various investment products and services were also not affected by the incident.
