Event Honors ULLICO’s Administrative Professionals for Their Work Supporting the Union Labor Movement
WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 26, 2010) – Magic. That is how Elizabeth H. Shuler, the first woman ever elected Secretary-Treasurer of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), described the work done by her audience of administrative professionals at a luncheon held in their honor by ULLICO Inc., a privately held financial and insurance services holding company.
Speaking at ULLICO’s 2nd Annual Administrative Professionals Luncheon in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, Shuler stated, “The best description for your work boils down to one word: magician. You truly make the impossible happen…The work you do supports American unions and, therefore, the services unions provide to American families. We are so proud to have you as a partner in the American labor movement.”
Rising through the ranks from her first union position in Local 125 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) in Portland, Ore., Ms. Shuler has achieved what few labor leaders do in their careers: a broad experience with many different workforces from blue collar to white collar to pink collar and now green collar, from manufacturing and service sectors to professional sectors.
In September 2009, she was elected AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer, the second-highest position in the labor movement, and now advocates on behalf of the voluntary federation of 56 national and international labor unions.
“We are delighted to have Ms. Shuler here with us to underscore the important role administrative professionals play in our workforce,” said Ed Smith, President of ULLICO Inc. “As the first woman and youngest officer elected to the AFL-CIO leadership, she represents a growing trend in the union labor movement – a trend that has shown an increase in the number of women and minorities who are advancing the services unions provide to America.”
Additional luncheon guests included Diann Woodard, President of the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA); Barbara Easterling, President of the Alliance of Retired Americans; and Gary Burke, President of The Union Labor Life Insurance Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ULLICO Inc.
Tuesday’s luncheon coincides with a series of monthly seminars ULLICO is offering about the valuable roles unions play in America today. The company is conducting these training sessions in concert with the National Labor College (NLC), an accredited institution praised for its union skills courses taken by more than 200,000 union officers and members, to teach union-unfamiliar workers who work in unions about what—and whom—they are working for and why the work is so critical.
