Sonia M. Axter

Biography

Ms. Axter is a Managing Director for Ullico Investment Advisors in its Infrastructure Investments group. Ms. Axter has 17 years experience in infrastructure development, principal ownership and project management. Prior to joining Ullico, Ms. Axter was a senior member of Deutsche Bank's alternatives investment group and performed both acquisitions and asset management of infrastructure assets. Ms. Axter was also formerly a senior member of Bechtel Enterprises, the infrastructure finance and development arm of Bechtel Group Inc. In her tenure at Bechtel, Ms. Axter led the redevelopment of one of the first public-private partnerships in the U.S., the $150 million light rail and real estate Cascade Station development in Portland, Oregon. Prior to business school, Ms. Axter spent 7 years as a Project Manager and Project Engineer on a range of transport, utility and environmentally-impacted civil construction projects for the Pacific NW division of Granite Construction Company. Ms. Axter holds an M.B.A. from Stanford Graduate School of Business and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington.

Tina Fletcher

Biography

Tina Fletcher is the Vice President for Ullico Casualty Group. Ms. Fletcher oversees the daily activities of Ullico's professional liability insurance department, which includes supervising underwriters and monitoring both renewal and new business policies. She also manages Ullico Casualty Group's underwriting system and composes policy language to keep coverage up-to-date with the needs of the Union workplace. Ms. Fletcher joined Ullico as a Senior Underwriter in 2009.

Ms. Fletcher previously worked for United Educators Insurance from May 1999 to November 2008 as Director of Underwriting. In this role, she managed a $130 million book of liability insurance and a staff of seven underwriters. Previous to United Educators, she served as underwriter for Victor O. Schinnerer, a subsidiary of Marsh, and as a Nationwide agent.

Ms. Fletcher graduated from Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Michigan with a B.S. in Marketing. Ms. Fletcher has a P&C Producers' license in the state of West Virginia and is working towards her RPLU.

She lives in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia with her husband and daughter Emma.

Alieu Jallow

In the second issue of Experts Corner, Alieu Jallow examines how the new changes to the Experience Modification Rating ("Ex Mod") will affect workers' compensation premiums in 2013.

Biography

Alieu Jallow is the Manager of the Commercial Lines Underwriting overseeing workers’ compensation, property, liability, auto, inland marine and umbrella coverage lines. In his position, Jallow manages a book of business of more than $150 million across 44 states. Before becoming manager, he was a multiline underwriter handling workers’ compensation and commercial package accounts and responsible for training new underwriters.

Prior to joining Ullico in 2007, Jallow worked for AFLAC as an account executive, handling clients’ supplemental insurance. He also worked at PFP Scmitt-Sussman Enterprises where he focused on disability and critical illness benefit coverage.

Jallow graduated from University of Maryland, Baltimore County with a Bachelor of Science in Financial ?Economics and a Certificate in Management. He holds a Maryland Health and Property & Casualty License, as well as, AINS, AU and CPCU designations.

Herbert A. Kolben

Senior Vice President, Real Estate Investment Group

Biography

Herbert Kolben is Senior Vice President of the Real Estate Investment Group responsible for the management of all mortgage and real estate investments including Separate Account J and various privately offered funds concentrating on real estate debt. Mr. Kolben has over 40 years of real estate experience including 21 with Union Labor Life and over 14 with Citibank N.A. where he was a Senior Credit Officer and Regional Vice President. At Citibank, his responsibilities included all real estate functions throughout the mid-Atlantic and Southeastern states as well as Director of Equities/East with responsibility for equity originations and capital markets interfacing for the eastern U.S. and Europe. Prior to joining Ullico, Mr. Kolben was a Senior Vice President at MNC Financial responsible for the administration, restructuring and disposition of a $1.9 billion portfolio. Mr. Kolben started his career with First Mortgage Investors REIT based in Miami, FL. He holds an MBA as well as a Bachelor of Commerce from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada.

Dominic Vari

Director, Claims, Ullico Casualty Group Inc.

Biography

Dominic Vari is an experienced claims professional who, since 1994, has managed claims and represented carriers in a wide variety of negotiations and settlements. Mr. Vari uses his background as a bar-admitted attorney to manage litigation strategy with outside counsel, negotiate multi-million dollar settlements, and review and update policy language to reflect changing trends in exposures. Additionally, he has managed compliance and fraud issues with regulatory bodies, coordinated with the U.S. Department of Labor on investigations and drafted agreements for new lines of business.

Since joining Ullico in 2004, he has handled the full spectrum of claims responses for the Fiduciary and Union Liability product lines, ranging from simple coverage questions to representing Ullico in all manners of court proceedings. His work has been instrumental in not only controlling and mitigating product-related risk exposures, but also in launching new product lines. His experiences as an adjuster for State Farm Insurance prior to joining Ullico, as well as his professional review of current trends, have been essential in maintaining and growing the business that serves Ullico’s affinity market.

Mr. Vari received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and holds a Juris Doctorate from the Delaware Law School at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. He was admitted to the Maryland State Bar in 1994.

Biography

Daniel L. Wolak is President of The Union Labor Life Insurance Company. He oversees the day-to-day operations of the organization, including expanding distribution of existing services and identifying growth opportunities. He has 35 years of experience in the insurance industry.

One of his focuses is to understand the ramifications of the healthcare reform legislation on the company’s signature Medical Stop Loss business, and suggest actions and strategies for the organization to pursue on this front. He leads a work group that includes outside representatives from labor that studies the issues and possible solutions for Ullico as well as labor.

Mr. Wolak is a Certified Life Underwriter (CLU), a Fellow, Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). In addition to these certifications, he is a current member of the Actuarial Advisory Council for Purdue University. He previously served a three-year term on the Society of Actuaries (SOA) Health Section Council, including one year as the Chairperson. Mr. Wolak earned both his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Statistics from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
