Case Manager – Stop Loss

ULLICO Inc., is actively recruiting a Case Manager – Stop Loss to join our Life & Health division. This person will be responsible for obtaining and reviewing complete claims information to estimate future costs of known ongoing medical conditions. Review the medical necessity and appropriateness of hospital claims, physician charges, specialty drug costs, usage and provide potential alternatives. This person must be able to think independently and make decisions based on clinical information and medical records.

Job duties/Responsibilities are as follows:

  • Gather and analyze clinical information and medical records from all providers for cost containment and future cost determination by maintaining a close working relationship with plan administrators, vendors, third party payers, employers, reinsurers and other social, psychological and medical health care providers
  • Interpret documents such as medical reference books, patient medical records, charges, summary plan descriptions, stop loss insurance benefits to evaluate liability/compensability and to make recommendations.
  • Compose clinical correspondence and communicate effectively with employees, employers (clients), TPA claims administrators, health care providers, claims and underwriting staff and executive management regarding current care and care alternatives
  • Apply clinical knowledge to make determinations of medical necessity. Troubleshoot complex clinical problems and practice independently without supervision of another licensed professional
  • Assess medical needs, care requirements and alternatives; monitor and follow up with the Plan Administrator, provider, etc., regarding the planning coordination and progress of treatment; evaluate and suggest other treatment and facility alternatives as appropriate to facilitate quality, cost-effective medical care for high risk individuals, trigger diagnoses and transplant losses
  • Provide cost containment by managing an inventory of Stop Loss claims (involving large case management, trigger diagnosis or transplant network losses), securing additional discounts from providers (either directly or through a preferred vendor), negotiating prices for medical services and supplies, negotiating settlements, developing transplant networks, evaluating losses, consulting with claims examiners about appropriateness of charges, educating clients and stop loss team about cost-effective alternatives.
  • Evaluate group claim information at the time of renewal and new business and provide underwriters with an estimated projection of expected claim dollars in the next policy period.
  • Prepare monthly report on all large case management. Communicate daily regarding large cases to the appropriate individuals.

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree and AT LEAST three years experience as a health professional. RN licensure is required. The candidate must demonstrate strong customer support skills and be able to communicate, both orally and in writing, with all levels of personnel. The ability to multitask and think independently is essential. The candidate must be able to manage concurrent deadlines and multiple priorities and be able to analyze and interpret various medical reports and documents.

Senior Compliance Analyst, Life & Health Department

ULLICO Inc., a diversified insurance and financial services company headquartered in Washington, DC, is actively recruiting a Compliance Professional to assist the AVP of Compliance in our Silver Spring, MD office. The Senior Compliance Analyst will interact with state regulators and will review legislation as it affects assigned insurance products.

The successful candidate will have a BS/BA degree and at least 5 years of Life & Health insurance experience with a strong regulatory compliance background.  Must have some knowledge of fraud/SIU reporting and be able to interact with state regulators.  Experience with regulatory bodies such as state insurance regulators, and other external stakeholders such as auditors and industry associations is highly desired.  Experience with regulatory and state product filings is a plus.  Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.

Additional Job Duties/Responsibilities are as follows: 

  • Interpret and implement changes to state and federal insurance laws and regulations that govern our business.
  • Draft responses to inquiries from regulators.
  • Participate in market conduct exams.
  • Manage the complaint, fraud and SIU processes. 
  • Draft compliance policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the review of advertising material. 
  • File appropriate forms with state insurance departments and follow-through to approval. 
  • Research, review and summarize laws and regulations applicable to assigned insurance products
  • Communicate to interested parties, status of filings and approvals.  Also communicate any state specific requirements for each product and state.
  • Work with Contract Analysts to ensure all issued forms are in compliance.
  • Respond to inquiries from other operational areas.

Claims Specialist

ULLICO Inc., is actively recruiting a Claims Specialist for our Silver Spring, MD office.

Job duties/responsibilities are as follows:

  • Receive and review all Stop Loss claims to determine if conditions meet requirements of policy provisions for eligibility for benefits.
  • Obtain proper medical and/or legal documentation from appropriate sources to support claims to include possible referral to outside sources.
  • Process claims according to policy provisions.
  • Review files on a consistent basis to determine appropriate follow-up actions to be taken.
  • Receive and review all applications for conversion of a group stop loss policy to an individual policy to determine eligibility for continued stop loss insurance coverage.
  • Identify and take appropriate actions as needed to obtain additional information if necessary.
  • Calculate and determine appropriate premiums for face amount of policies to be issued.
  • Maintain and update stop loss databases.
  • Prepare and assimilate appropriate reports.
  • Ensure all files are maintained and all contents in appropriate order.
  • Handle all telephone and written legal inquiries and refer problems or complex claims related issues to our legal department to determine appropriate actions to bring closure.
  • Assist other Claims Examiners in claims processing.

The successful candidate will have a High School Diploma or equivalent with five years of claims processing experience, stop loss preferred. Sound technical claims experience and demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office applications is required. Must demonstrate strong oral and written communications skills and have the ability to multitask.

Assistant Vice President of Compliance

Ullico Inc., a diversified insurance and financial products and services company headquartered in Washington, DC, is actively recruiting a Life and Health Compliance Professional to manage and lead the compliance unit of our subsidiary, The Union Labor Life Insurance Company.  The Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Compliance will be responsible for the oversight and monitoring of all regulatory compliance matters affecting the Life and Health insurance company functions including but not limited to rate and form filing, agent licensing, underwriting, marketing, product development and  claims.  The AVP of Compliance will report directly to the Vice President, Corporate Compliance of Ullico’s Law Department.  The position is located within the Life and Health business unit in Silver Spring, MD.

The position is responsible for communication with state and federal insurance regulators, supervision of regulatory examinations, monitoring and communicating the implementation of new or revised laws and regulations, supervising the division’s anti-fraud process, complaint tracking, review and approval of advertising material, supervision of third party administrators and compliance-related project management. The responsibilities also include interaction with key leaders of the various business units within the Life and Health division and Information Technology.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of a BS/BA degree. A JD or Master’s degree is a decided plus.  The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 7-10 years of insurance industry experience in the group life and health insurance area with a strong regulatory compliance background.  Prior insurance product experience should include Individual Life, Group Life, Accidental Death and Dismemberment, Medical Stop Loss and specialty health such as vision and dental.  Staff and project management experience is a must.  Filing and/or operations experience is a plus.

Senior Portfolio & Investment Analyst

Real Estate Investment Group

ULLICO Inc, one of the nation’s largest sources for real estate development financing, is recruiting a Senior Portfolio & Investment Analyst to join its small group of professionals that manage a $3 billion portfolio of commercial mortgage loans. Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President, the Senior Portfolio and Investment Analyst will be responsible for maintaining portfolio-wide and investment specific data for Separate Account J, the production of the monthly and quarterly reports such as individual fund characteristics, Appraisal Status reports, General Account valuation, monthly J Valuation reports and so on; assist the SVP in the underwriting, due diligence, closing and monitoring of House Accounts; assist the SVP in the budgeting process; review and analyze department monthly income and expense statements; the development of appropriate forms and/or language to further monitor portfolio.

  • Prepare, secure approval and maintain portfolio data including monthly reports such as the J Portfolio Valuation, Performance Comparison, Property Income and Expense analysis for USA Realty Investments and so on and quarterly reports such as Appraisal Status, Annual Reviews, Job Creation, Portfolio Characteristics, General Account valuation, Portfolio Construction Concentration and so on.
  • Monitor individual asset reports due to SVP from Regional Managers such as Construction Status reports, Multi-Family Sales Status reports, Watch List reports and so on.  Prepare and submit to SVP for review and approval the same reports, when applicable, for House Accounts.
  • Assist SVP in the due diligence, approval, closing and monitoring of House Accounts.
  • Maintain a “warehouse” for newspaper, magazine and other articles related to REIG customer base, markets and competition.
  • Assist SVP in preparing annual budget in accordance with corporate goals.
  • Assist SVP in the preparation of the quarterly budget reforecast.
  • Monthly, prepare department revenue results and analyze and explain significant variances.  Present findings to SVP.
  • Undertake ad hoc project and reports.  Assist SVP in the preparation of internal and external presentations.
  • Ensure adherence to corporate and department policies and procedures.
  • Assist SVP in compiling portfolio data in response to investor inquiries.
  • On occasion, may perform site inspections; attend negotiating sessions, closings, groundbreakings, pre-construction conferences and so on with SVP.

The successful candidate is required to have a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Economics or related field.  An MBA or advanced degree in finance, accounting or real estate is preferred but not required.  Must possess strong interpersonal skills, strong written and verbal communication skills, be service oriented and have a minimum of five years related experience.

Senior Regional Manager

Real Estate Investment Group

ULLICO Inc, one of the nation’s largest sources for real estate development financing, is recruiting a Senior Regional Manager to join its small group of professionals that manage a $3 billion portfolio of commercial mortgage loans. Located in our office in Silver Spring, MD the selected individual will originate, negotiate, underwrite and close commercial construction and permanent loans for customers and prospects located in the mid-Atlantic region. Construction lending experience is a must!  The succesful candidate will:

  • Call on existing and prospective customers, originate and negotiate new construction loans.
  • Perform project due diligence, prepare loan committee memos, present  loans to investment committee and mortgage sub-committee.
  • Negotiate closing documents and perform and evaluate due diligence research.
  • Manage existing portfolio.
  • Recommend disbursements of funds and prepare quarterly inspection reports and transaction memos.
  • Analyze trends in general business conditions and real estate sectors in assigned territory.
  • Engage, review and approve third party appraisals, environmental reports, engineering analyses and construction progress.

The successful candidate is required to have a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Economics or related field.  An MBA or advanced degree in finance, accounting or real estate is preferred but not required.  Must possess strong interpersonal skills, be service oriented and have a minimum of seven to ten years commercial real estate lending experience with a proven track record.  Strong credit skills a necessity along with proven analytical, negotiation, loan presentation and communication capabilities. Should be computer proficient with a strong working knowledge of Argus, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Must be able to work independently.
